My Anti-Anti-Microsoft Rant

Lest the visitors from my sister’s site really believe I’m in love with Microsoft…
It’s really more of a dislike for Mac OS than a liking of Windows. I think Mac OS is ugly. I don’t find Windows particularly fun to look at either, but it does have the benefit of not making me want to puke.
I know it’s all just a matter of personal taste, so all of you Apple fanboys and fangirls can just let me have my personal taste, ok? Thank you. You’re so nice.
So why not Linux? Linux is cool. I’ve used Ubuntu, but as you can see in the right column of this page, I write software for Windows. Well, I should say I used to write software for Windows. I haven’t updated any of that software in a long time. I can’t bring myself to completely abandon the idea of writing more software for Windows though.
The main reason I stick with Windows is because I’m so used to it. I’m not a big fan of getting a system up and running the way I like it, especially when it’s a system I’m not already familiar with such as Linux or Mac OS. As proof, I probably need to reinstall Windows to get rid of junk*, but I don’t because it means I’d have to re-do everything. Yes, I have backups and all that, but if I were to re-do everything I’d want to do some things differently and I just don’t have the time for that.
* The speed of the machine is fine. Really. I don’t know what people do to their Windows machines that makes them run slower over time. People have to re-install Windows every 6 months?! I find that extremely hard to believe and I work my computer as hard as anyone I know. I’ve been running this installation of Windows for over 2 years now and the only time it slows down is when I’ve got gazillions of things open at once. Oh, and as new software comes out that’s been written for newer systems my computer will obviously be slower, but that’s not Windows related.

i’m with you on the “reinstall every 6 months” issue. i usually leave my windows box on for months at a time. the only time i ever reboot is when a security update forces me to

The longest I ever let a windows box run was for 70 days back in 2004. The PC was running Windows 2000 and was on considerably slower hardware. I finally rebooted because of the security updates.

Mac isn’t ugly if you get rid of the horrible brushed metal look, which is VERY EASY TO DO.
Also, I hear you. This is why I still use Paintshop Pro. I’m used to it.
Sigh.

Hey, it’s your pictures in the below entries causing the IE6 issue. They’re too wide for this section. We can widen this section (reduce the margin on the left) or you can post smaller pictures.
Lemme know what you want to do.
xx

Reduce the margin on the left? Hmmmm… no, but reducing the column with my tags and software would be good.

My husband is a die hard Microsoft fan & much to his dismay I’ve learned to love my MacBook Pro. So I had to check out your site when Jessica linked to it.
I love the look of OS, so it’s no wonder that I find Vista rather pretty.

Oh alright. How do you like them apples?

Seems to be workin’ in IE6 now - though not that stupid png java. Hmmm.
I can make the pngs gifs, but they won’t be as awesome looking. How much do you care about your IE6 readers?

Looks good to me. I’ll fix the pngs eventually…

Maybe if we all stop designing for IE6 users then they’ll all GET A CLUE and move on over to the dark side.

I would hope so, though I bet there will be some people who don’t get a new browser until they get a new computer.
I wonder how many Netscape 3.0 users are out there wondering why websites don’t work anymore.

What is a security update?
People restart their computers?
What is this Microsoft world you are talking about?
;)
I probably feel this way because I only use my Mac for fun and an occasional work-from-home day. Maybe I wouldn’t like it either if I were more emotionally involved in my computer.

ha. ha. ha.
;)
I don’t doubt that if I spent any amount of time with either Linux or Mac that I’d get used to them and like them. But I’m not sure I want to take the time just now. (especially when I think Mac OS is ugly. hehe)

Makes sense. I don’t program, so I just think it’s cool and fun. Especially the new Leopard OS.

I think the issues with reinstalling every 6 months are a thing of the past. Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and to a lesser extent 98 SE all had the 6 month window. I’ve experienced it first hand.
I’m in the same boat as you, though. I tried switching to Windows Vista and it is such a different beast that I was caught off guard. Luckily I had dual booted it with XP so I could easily switch back.
I’ve been running this install of XP for about 1.5 years.
